Long Ago, Dweller and Faefolk communed often to the point where it seemed as if there was no boundaries between their realms. The Dwellers would supply Faefolk with tools, weapons and rare gemstones in exchange for expertise in spells and enchantments as the nature of Dweller biology inhibited them from using magic without help. Their tough skin worked well to keep them protected from the harsh, rocky terrain of the Underdark, however, it also made it incredibly difficult for them to draw the necessary mana for spells from their surroundings. The Underdark also proved to be ill-suited to the Faefolk’s repeated trips. They lacked the keen eyesight native to the dwellers to navigate the landscape and, if not extremely careful, would get injured on the journey. Likewise for Dwellers, the Faewilds was equally as dangerous, lacking the agility of their fae counterparts, journeying proved be quite troublesome as deadly creatures seemed to roam every corner of the realm! Leaders of both races grappled with this issue for many decades. After ages of research and toil, a breakthrough discovery was found: Lapis Luzuli. The ingredient worked splendidly when use to enchant equipment, so why could it not be used to enchant a being of stone? Using the magical dye, a certain few dwellers could now draw corresponding runes on their bodies that would allow them draw the necessary mana that would allow them to cast spells. This practice would become known as the Sapphire Rite in respect to the brilliant glow the blue markings would give whenever a spell was cast. The magic of these Dwellers was far weaker than that of their fae counterparts and the markings consistently needed to replenished with fresh lapis after several castings, but alas, a bright new future shone for the two races. The Lapis Dweller community was birthed and from then on they quickly became the main ambassadors for many successful Faefolk meetings and transactions.
